JamesF:
Quick question…how much pollution is caused in the manufacturing of the parts necessary to create those solar panels?

Something tells me that you have the answer JamesF! Gee, why don’t cha give us the answer!

Nice blog you have here. Keep it up

Not only do I not have the answer.. but I cannot even type my own name! It was an honest question, along with how much of the energy associated with the production of those panels is generated by the evil fluid we call oil….and how many other hazardous chemicals are used and improperly disposed of when making things like the circuit boards …

But but but, oil is also used in trucks to transport fruits and vegetables to the local market! Should we boycott fruits and vegetables JamesF? Oh the pain! I can’t think for myself anymore!

I like how Tim always seems to get the last word. But JamesF does bring up a point, it does take a lot to manufacture “alternative” sources of energy. But we need to realize this is the start and generally speaking, finding a new way to do something is inefficient in the beginning. Yet the hope is for efficiency in the future. It’s like a business that sources manufacturing or labor. They spend a ton of money and logistics getting there with the hope the turnaround saves them in the end.
Same idea with these panels. Yes, they are expensive. Yes, they are not as efficient as gas. But the idea is that gas we continually have to search for and exploit. Whereas “alternatives” we only need to gather once. These panels should be good for a longer time. So the electricity they generate will be cheaper over time. This is the hope. The other side of that hope is that technology improves along with it and these methods become more applicable.
Check out these wild buildings some of which are actually being built:

Amazing things in that link, thanks Crevan.
