Lefty’s Appearance On Blog Bunker

Just got done doing my radio appearance on Sirius Satellite Radio’s “The Blog Bunker” on channel 110. Thanks again to those guys and especially the host Joe Salzone for inviting me.

I’ll have to re-record the audio during replay tonight.  I’ll try to have something up tomorrow morning.

What a rush.

UPDATE
So here it is. The clip is about 14:50 long. The host wasn’t exactly unbiased, I mean the first question was “Is Obama’s ego getting out of control?” And then of course, the part where not just the caller, but the host call me a pacifist (as if). But it sure was fun!

Give it a listen and let me know what you thought.

Lefty certainly held his own in this interview. Good Job.

  2. ccs:

i couldn’t really tell what the host’s point of view was or not.

even bothering to take up the semantics of “symbol” seems to be a waste of time–not to mention “change” or “hope.” it’s kind of orwellian how parts of our language are cornered off by either party. (see also “truthiness” under Colbert). given everyone’s short attention span, i guess we can’t expect too much. But it was nice for that caller to come back with the full quote for the record.

hypocrite that i am, i would caution you about using the term “radical change.” i know what you meant, but it’s like giving someone a freebie to throw in your face.

i think the shit would hit the fan if you just told the bozo–”lookit, i used to translate high priority arabic. i am rather more qualified than you might think to weigh in on this, byaaatch.”

that said, i agree, you held your own admirably. there’s a certain amount of leeway i could sense you were giving him as a host, but it was good that you were polite about it. it’s sad to see a show format get dragged down too far (hannity anyone?).

    Edit From Lefty:
Yes, the above is true. I used to be an Arabic linguist when I was in the service. But I don’t think any of that would have been relevant to the conversations. Although it did mean that I had a big enough clue about the situation in the Middle East to know that gutting Iraq’s power structure such as we did would lead to a 3-country split. When everything is said and done Iraq will be an Shiite area, a Sunni area, and a Kurdish area. However, a Kurdish area will also destabilize the region because Kurdistan actually falls within Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Jordan, Syria (and maybe someplace else I forgot).

    Great job on the interview!

  4. Tim:

Nice job, Lefty. You spoke very clearly, while the host seemed to repeat, repeat some of his words to make it seem like he cares, cares more about what he’s saying. Very irritating.

I agree with both of the comments above: Lefty held his own while the host was reaching for an issue where there was none, such as harping on “change” and Obama’s use of that word during the campaign, as if that were possibly a negative somehow. The fact that Obama does NOT have 40+ years in the Senate is a good thing, let’s just get that straight. What Obama accomplished while serving as IL Senator is admirable, and his intellect and demeanor alone should leave one to worry very little otherwise, let alone his policy ideas. I mean seriously folks, we have just suffered under the most mentally deficient President ever for 8 long years. How can anyone go thru 8 years of Bushtard and then find so much worry with Obama? Reaching, that’s how.

The point that the host misses is: 2 guys (Obama and McCain), as well as all the previous candidates, can campaign using the idea of “change”, but ultimately only one candidate can own it. 2 candidates can’t use the same phrase. Even the dumbest ‘Merikan voter will agree to that. After 8 years of insanity with the Bush Admin, it’s clear that Obama represents (to the majority) the sorely need “change” that we all desire, whilst McCain cannot seem to keep his flip flops in order.

The host would have been better served to talk about how McCain left his 1st wife on her deathbed, serving her divorce papers none the less. If the Dem did that, the media would have been all over it. He could have talked about the shit storm of gaffes coming from McCain almost daily, and how the Republican party is fractured and in decline, and rightfully so, and how that leads back to 8 years of Bush, bungling Iraq, enriching contractors and war profiteers, trying to kill Social Security, failing Katrina victims, leaking Plame, killing the DC Maddam, oh, and that giant elephant called 911 – never properly investigated, 2 wars later and Condi never presented the proof of Bin Laden that she promised, and how McCain would totally be just a 3rd term of Bush. McCain’s worst offense – flip flopping on torture.

  5. J-Dub:

Nice job man! You really put up a good fight, for a pacifist! haha But seriously, great interview. My favorite part was your reply to the caller asking about the $600 mill that Obama has raised. All the host could say is “Do you work for the Obama campaign?”

He’s no Hillary Clinton, but he’ll get my vote :)

  6. Lefty McLefterson:

I think I’d be a great press secretary.

I could be the first one ever to drop the F-Bomb during a press conference.

We already know I wouldn’t be the first to drop the F-Bomb on the floor of the U.S. Senate. Cheney beat me to it.

I actually barely noticed the pacifist comment. I was too intent on answering the questions. However, if I had thought about it I would’ve corrected both the host and the caller. Those of you who know me can testify with absolute certainty that I’m virtually the opposite of a pacifist.

  7. JamesF:

Finally got around to listening to it. You did a pretty good job with it. Your site got a lot of mentions – did you see any increase in hits afterwards?

  8. Coonsey:

    Frank,

I just got an email from somebody on the Blog Bunker wanting to interview me. I’ve never heard of them and don’t have Sirus. I did a search and found your site. I just wanted to say you did a WONDERFUL job on your interview.

I have to ask, have you EVER interviewed or talked on radio/tv before? You sound like an expert. I am just a Letter to the Editor type writer – no expertise what so ever. Why they picked me and my site I’ll never know.

Anyway, I was wondering just how much experience you’ve had doing this? Are you a professional writer? I started a blog about a year ago, just now created the latest one. Very new at this stuff, but wanted a place to express my views.

Any suggestions about this radio show or my being interviewed?

  9. Lefty McLefterson:

Nope, I’ve never been on the radio before. In one of my grad school courses we had to prepare for debates against other teams, but that’s the closest I’ve ever come to something like that.

I’m by no means an expert. The show should give you some broad idea of what kind of topics you’ll be discussing. I had a couple of days notice. I would be sure to review any points of view you have and be prepared to back them up with examples in case the host or in my case a caller tries to argue with you.

I’m not a professional writer either. I’m a software engineer. In grad school I had to do a lot of writing and over the last 10 years or so my writing has improved dramatically.

As you can see from a few clicks of your mouse, my blog isn’t about long diatribes. It’s about a quick joke and once in awhile a deeper point.

Make sure you have your points clear in your own head so you’ll be prepared to articulate them. And relax. It really was pretty fun.
